I’ve gotten to the point in my work where I have began putting together some level designs, and one problem has foiled me from the get go.
What should the camera be?
Obviously, if it was a static camera, the level would have to be from a single perspective, so everything would have to be on screen, somewhat restricting the size.
A “Look at” camera, which stays still, but tilts to look at the character is not an option, as it makes the controls change slightly as it tilts, making game play irritating.
A simple 3rd person perspective camera could be used, though the level would then have to be in a fairly cramped environment.
I have had all these working at some point, and I am stuck between 3rd person and static.
One is nice and consistent, making plotting the levels nice and easy, while the other gives me much grater freedom in the way I lay the levels out, giving more fun game play.
Perhaps it is time to experiment with a camera than pans?
I think so.
